FLOWERY BRANCH -- Most high school football fans in north Georgia know about Flowery Branch's high-flying offense. But its defense is just as potent, and the Falcons proved so last week, stonewalling previously undefeated Heritage in the dying seconds to preserve a 21-13 win in Conyers.

The third-ranked Falcons (7-0, 7-0 Region 8-AAAA) have played strong defense all season, allowing just 12.1 points per game, and last week's game-clinching performance against a top 10 team showed the Flowery Branch defense is ready for some of the closer games that are sure to come over the coming weeks.

For their performance in holding Heritage to just 13 points (well under its season average of 30 -- at that point), the Falcons defense earned the Gainesville Jaycees Player of the Week award.

Access North Georgia sports editor Morgan Lee went to the Branch this week to present the award and talk to three members of the unit -- all team captains -- about what has gone into this season and what's to come.
