The Gainesville Jaycees recently completed a project long in the making by holding their first ever football awards banquet -- a ceremony highlighted by the presentation of a $1,000 scholarship and their Player of the Year award.

The Jaycees presented East Hall High School offensive/defensive lineman C.J. White with a $1,000 scholarship and named Gainesville High quarterback Deshaun Watson their Player of the Year.

White was selected from a group of outstanding candidates nominated by area football coaches. Criteria for the scholarship weighs play on the field with work in the classroom and community involvement. White helped anchor the Vikings' turnaround of the past two seasons, as East Hall bounced back from three straight 1-9 seasons to go 3-7 in 2010 and 5-5 in 2011 -- White's senior season. He also carries 3.88 grade point average, plays baseball for the Vikings and is heavily involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Watson, meanwhile, was nothing short of dominant in 2011. The sophomore tied the Georgia High School Association record for touchdowns scored in season of 58 while passing for 3,251 yards and rushing for 1,073 yards. He also helped lead the Red Elephants to the Class AAA semifinals.

The football banquet will be an annual tradition for the Jaycees, who are proud to honor these and all of north Georgia's high school football players and wish each the best in their future endeavors.
